[this is my life, and it's ending one entry at a time...]

2010-08-31 - 10:33 p.m. - save yourself a trip to the zoo and let me show you these pythons...

In case you haven't read it, I suggest you flash back a bit to my previous entry. It is fairly recent and is sort of a "catching up" of certain things that happened during my fairly long hiatus from blogging...

Hey you are back! What can I do you for? Oh wait, you are here to read the rest of my blog! Well, by all means, carry on then. So we are fast-forwarding a bit from the last entry to about a month or so ago. So my mom schedules an appointment with her doctor to check on my health and run lab work on my blood and what not. I guess I was bit plump, and not in the "pretty, hot and tempting" sort of way, but I didn't really have any obvious or nagging health problems or concerns other than the aforementioned tendency of my body towards what I call "flabitude".

I gotta tell ya, it's fairly easy to achieve that level of "flabitude", all you really need to do is spend all your free time on your couch or recliner playing video games, none of that silly Wii Fit nonsense, because that involves too much calorie burning. Plus you should pretty much eat whatever the hell you want, but ideally it should be fast food, the greasier the better.

So I weigh in at the doctor's office, I don't remember the exact poundage, but it was pretty heavy, around the ballpark of 256, 258 maybe? The my doctor shows me this weight chart, the ideal weight for someone of my height (6'0") is like 170 or 180 lbs? I haven't been that weight since high school. But whatever, I see the beer gut hanging from my belly when I look in the mirror, I know I'm fucking overweight, I don't need a chart or a scale to tell me that my good doctor. He then draws my blood and I come back in a week for the lab results.

The basic breakdown was that I'm borderline diabetic, meaning my blood sugar was in the higher range of normal and there was some other indicator, I forgot what the fucking name of it was, but it also was a warning sign for diabetes. The kicker was that I had lower than normal testosterone, which was likely caused by various stresses to the body such as smoking, drinking, lack of proper sleep, tension, lack of exercise, etc.

So that was pretty much my wake up call. Although I was largely asymptomatic in terms of the way I feel, if I let things go on the way they have been, it would eventually be a downward spiral in terms of my health. So I made a commitment to exercise regularly and to eat healthily and minimize my smoking and drinking to "special occasions"

Aside from a brief 5 day hiatus where I was recovering from a cold and a couple of weekends of partying to celebrate my cousin's b-day and her "bon voyage" as she goes abroad to medical school, I've pretty much working out at least every other day with a combination of strength/resistance training and fat burning with some occasional cardio training thrown in for good measure.

Since one of my fitness goals is "to get diesel" and rock "the gun show", my primary caloric intake is protein shakes, usually one in the morning, one before workout and one after workout. I also get in at least one meal a day, I try to make it healthy, even if it's fast food, like a McD's salad w/ grilled chicken and lowfat dressing. Sometimes I'll cave and get the real dressing or sometimes I'm broke and get the $1 McChicken sandwich with the $1 side salad. But really, I try not to "cheat" unless it's a weekend or a special occasion, and even then I try to stay mindful of what I eat, because I have to minimize, event cut out my carb intake, which means less bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and other starchy foods, you know, basically the stuff I love to eat.

I've pretty much given up on sweets mostly because of the borderline diabetes thing. I used to have a candy bar like a Twix or a Heath Bar or maybe some Skittles, some Starburst Fruit Chews or Chewy Sprees, depending on my mood for a snack daily or maybe every other day, along with a bag of chips and a can of AriZona Green Iced Tea.

Now it's filtered water from my brita dispenser (I fucking hate the taste of diet sodas and drinks, with the exception of sugar free red bull and 5 hour energy, because sometimes I need the fucking caffeine) and protein bars for when I have an overwhelming urge to snack.

Since I'm trying to feed "these pythons" I call arms until they get pretty fucking massive I'm also taking a createne supplement. I gotta tell ya, that stuff is pretty fucking nasty. The Cell Tech from MuscleTech brand of createne came highly recommended from the dude at the GNC. I got the "Blue Raspberry" flavor because I thought it would be pretty decent. I guess the flavoring helps a little, but I gotta tell ya that stuff is still hard to swallow, and if you ever had a blue colored beverage before, I don't have to tell you what it does to your shit. That's right children, the fucking crap that comes out of your bunghole also turns an "interesting" shade of blue. After a minute or so of being totally dumbfounded, I had to follow up with a huge WTF!

I just got through the "loading phase" where you had to drink that createne mess twice a day for a week and I was about to go into the "maintenance phase" where you only had to drink it once a week after workouts, but then I got sick for a few days, which means I have to fucking reload the loading phase and go another week drinking that shit twice a day. Motherfucker!

Anyway, tomorrow is the first of the month, and the first week of every month you get a 20% discount on all items in GNC if you are a "gold member", which I am. I'm probably going to switch to "Lemon" or some more neutral colored concoction. Hopefully it fucking tastes better too...

As far as results go, I can at the very least say that I feel better about myself. I'm sort of glad I have the whole "health" thing to help motivate me because I don't think I would have been able to self-motivate myself into sticking with a regular workout and diet plan just out of the blue. I don't really weigh in regularly, since I'm strength training and slowly building muscle, I may actually wind up heavier than I did before because muscle is 2x more dense than the equivalent volume of fat.

I do notice that clothes fit me a bit better and I'm able to fit into my older pants from when I was a bit leaner. I may have jumped the gun a bit though. When I was on the treadmill in the workout room of my building, facing the bay window I noticed some muscle definition in my arms. So after my workout I got a bunch of T-shirts from the closet that I hardly ever wear anymore and started cutting out the sleeves, I mean I was going crazy with that shit. I must have cut the arms off of at least a half-dozen T-shirts, not to mention one of my hooded sweat shirts and even one of my dress shirts with an unsalvageable torn sleeve.

The thing is, although my arms do have a bit more definition than the flabiness of my arms that was before, but you can only really see it when my muscles are flexed or fully extended, you can see a few cuts here and there, the outline of my bicep and tricep, the "triangle" of my deltoid muscle, but when I'm not fully flexing or fully extending my arm, it looks pretty much like your standard arm, maybe less flabby, but still just standard. I guess I can still walk the streets in my 80's-esque sleeveless t-shirts, I just have to make a mental note to tighten my arms up when a cute chick walks by... =p

I also have some ways to go in terms of my gut. I have the feeling that it's going to be the toughest part to lose. I may have to amp up my workout schedule and maybe go in daily instead of every other day. I guess we will see. Anyway, that's all that there is to write home about, so until next time...
