2004-04-14 - 5:42 p.m. - it's still in the air...
I made it through the first interview. Although I don't have a definitive
answer yet, I think I made a good impression.
Personally, I think it's a very good match. It's a small company located in
one big room of a warehouse comprised of a relatively young crew. My generation
basically, no more dealing with antiquated baby-boomers who either treat me like
their offspring (with the good and bad connotations associated with it) or
are simply threatened by my raw talent. ;) The only snag is that I only saw one
chick amongst their crew. Not that I don't mind working with guys because us
guys are cool. =p It's just that I was looking forward to working in a more
gender-diverse work environment since may last job consisted primarily of
members of the male persuasion.
Just talking to the two guys I interviewed with, it seems they need someone
who is willing to get down and dirty right from the get-go. This person is
obviously me. They of course like the fact that I'll be finishing off my degree
before the end of the year. There are certain software packages they need me to
be proficient in like Photoshop, since what I'll be doing will be heavy into
graphics and design. I of course told them I'll be willing to train and learn
whatever they need me to. As long as I have the software to play with, things
like that shouldn't be a problem. I also mentioned my experience as a PC
technician on my last job which seemed to pique their interest as I'm sure they
have no actual tech support department being such a small company.
Since this is a small company, I know I will be able to learn a lot. I can
see how I'll be getting into everything. Hell, they even asked if I was willing
to work with a Mac. Although the majority of my experience revolves around PCs I
basically told them I'm there to both learn and apply what I already know. It
looks like they need a solid programmer as well. Although I wouldn't necessarily
call myself "solid" in terms of programming, I'm the kind of person who by
working with a product or programming language long enough and with sufficient
technical documentation, I'll be able to figure it out eventually. I can get it
even faster with the proper training. They need someone who is experience in the
PHP language. One small hitch is that I am learning server-side programming in
school using the ASP.NET language. Hopefully that won't be too much of a hitch.
It seems they received quite a varied response from the e-Recruiting program
at my school. Hopefully, I have enough of a leg-up on the other students vying
for this internship to nail it. They said they will contact me in a few days. I
think there's a good possibility given my E-Commerce background and my
willingness to delve right into the graphic design aspect of the position.
Although this is "officially" a non-paying internship position, One of the guys
I interviewed with mentioned the possibility of project-related "bonuses" which
is totally cool because I like need money and stuff... =p
As far as style went, I was looking totally GQ with the black suit which
LP helped me
pick out. (pictures coming soon).
F-V also offered me an incentive in the form
of cookies, baked goods and other various forms of snackage. This would rock because I'm
totally lacking in the junk-food department. Hey, quality junk-food costs money
and right now I'm a broke bitch. The fact that some of them are going to be
baked by
F-V herself is just over-the-top incentive for doing well.
Speaking of junk food, I had myself a whole
bunch of McDonald's cheeseburgers. Apparently they have a "tax day" promotion,
39 hamburgers and 49 cheeseburgers, for today only, limit 5 per customer per
visit. So naturally I went in, bought 5 then hit the drive-thru and bought 5
more. I scarfed down about 4 and left the rest in the fridge for later. That
pretty much knocked me out. I took an hour nap, damn drowsy inducing burgers...
I drove the car to school because I have to pick up my mom and sister from
the airport later after class. The parking downtown is killer, around $13 and
that's the fucking student rate. Luckily it's not coming out of my pocket. =p It's almost time for class so I'll wrap this entry up.
I'll have to start on my "Thank
You" letter to the company tomorrow. It's just a matter of time and luck
now, but hopefully I'll nail it...
